storyboard excerpts

This image (above) is one of the first shots of the animation, after the title and the establishing long shot. The animation begins with this character lying on a floor alone. During the beginning of the scene, the dominant color is a dark, deep blue signifying the characters loneliness and depression. This shot establishes the introduction of something new (A new character). The new character is foreshadowed by a bright light that emanates off screen and ... grabs the female characters attention. During the actual animation I will strive to represent the fear and curiosity in her facial expressions more effectively as well. This shot will last for some time (relative to most other shots) to accentuate the anticipation toward the audience as well as go into detail with the facial expressions. My hopes are to be able to effectively show the full range of emotions she experiences starting from wonder, happiness ( hope of companionship) , fear, then courage, which is represented by (maybe) a stern look and a firm planting of her hand on the ground next to her as she rises up to turn. Although the colour in the shot shown is an orange I feel beginning with a more reddish tinge ( or red) in synchronisation with the character portraying fear then changing to an orange would be more powerful.

It took a while of experimenting to get this shot right and I still have my doubts about it. The dominant orange hue of the background and enveloping light signifies the energy and passion emanating from this new character while the blue shadow that discards the identifying features of this character (hopefully) mirrors the emotion of loneliness of the female character. His strong static stance and posture coupled with the faint muscular details of his form have been used to capture this characters strength and power. In the end I liked how the highly saturated reflective light around the edges of his form almost frame him, draw the eye to him and accentuate his masculinity. I also like, although very subtle ( almost subliminal), how the lines framing his form seem to be an outer shell around the blue, empowering the idea that his loneliness is an internal attribute. I came upon that idea while doing my color script.

  1. These are looking fantastic so far. The second image is definitely quite powerful, and contrasts well with the mood of the first, which I think will have a strong impact on the audience.

Can't wait to see more. :)
